Student Organizations

The UTK MBA Program has many additional features that attract high energy, high performing students to the program. UTK participates in numerous regional, national, and international case competitions, boasts an impressive speaker symposia, and provides opportunities for involvement with industry and community programs.

Tennessee Organization of MBAs (TOMBA)
TOMBA is a student-run organization that serves as an interface between faculty and students. Members also perform a variety of functions throughout the year including community service work, maintaining alumni contacts, promoting the MBA program to companies, organizing the mentor program and planning social and intramural activities. TOMBA also facilitates Town Hall meetings with the faculty several times each semester to foster feedback and discussion about the program.

Peer Mentoring Program
This extension of TOMBA is designed to provide support, guidance, and advice to first-year students. Second-year students volunteer to serve as mentors for an assigned team at the beginning of each semester. Mentors are especially helpful during the first few weeks of school during the adjustment period to the MBA program and the Knoxville area.

Corporate Connections
This student-run organization focuses on "recruiting" companies identified by students as desirable to work with. Students make contacts through phone calls, alumni and formal presentations to educate existing and prospective recruiters about what is happening in the UT MBA program and why UT MBA students stand out above those from other schools.

MBA Marketing Association
Formed in 1999 this organization helps companies with marketing projects, holds workshops for students on a variety of topics including marketing software and interviewing skills. The group also works with faculty and staff that make up the Marketing Task Force.

E-forum
With the business landscape changing daily due to the advent of new technologies, the goal of e-forum is to provide an incubator and knowledge pool for students, faculty and the community about the most recent technological breakthroughs in the business world. As a student, you will find that staying at the cutting edge of business requires understanding of the Internet and e-commerce, and that is what e-forum will give you. The world is on the verge of a new industrial revolution. As MBA students, we are interested in learning and sharing all the information that we can, in order to aid in the transition to this new business world. For more information contact

The e-forum also maintains a Business Information Web site: http://bus.utk.edu/ebus

Women's Organization of MBAs (WOMBA)
To support, train and encourage women participating in the UT's MBA program, a group of female students formed this group in 1998. This group holds a speaker series, female mentoring program, workshops, community outreach and social activities throughout the year. There is also a wine class in the spring led by Dr. Richard Reizenstein. Although the focus is on building a network for women both academically and professionally, the group's activities are open to all students.

Global Business Institute - GLOBI
GLOBI promotes international activity for students and faculty in the College of Business Administration. The institute strengthens existing programs and develops strategies for building international linkages. Currently there are both 7-10 day cultural experiences and semester long educational opportunities available. The Institute is developing international internship opportunities for the student's overall enhancement. More information about GLOBI and it's services are available through the website http://bus.utk.edu/globi.

University of Tennessee Torch Funds
Clayton Torch Fund
Haslam Torch Fund
These offer students the unique opportunity to manage financial funds in conjunction with the Department of Finance. Dr. Jim Wansley, department head and CFA is the faculty sponsor. The money to start the funds was donated by Jim Clayton of Clayton Homes and Jim Haslam of Pilot Corporation. The primary objective is to provide students with the opportunity to develop real-world skills in portfolio management and cross-functional team management. Each fund is comprised of 5-6 MBA students that compete with each other and with a designated benchmark.

Case Competitions
Participation as a member in one of our five case competitions offers another dynamic learning opportunity for UT MBA students. The teams compete at international, national and regional events against other highly ranked MBA programs from around the world. Recent successes include a regional and a national championship and three top-three finishes at the international level. Members of the case teams test the skills learned in the classroom against peer MBA students from other programs, while gaining invaluable exposure and networking opportunities with recruiters from many of the world's premier companies.
