MBA Internships

MBA Internships

The Tennessee MBA program is designed to give students a summer away from the classroom to take all the cutting edge business knowledge and analytical skills they’ve learned throughout the year and to apply it on the job at leading companies in the global marketplace.

MBA interns are not administrative support. They are strategic, analytical, enthusiastic team players who can provide your organization with a fresh-perspective on your business critical issues. Tennessee MBA’s are known for their excellent communication skills and their willingness to roll-up their sleeves and dig in to projects.

Internship Format

MBA Internships are typically 12-14 weeks in duration and take place at the conclusion of the first year of the MBA program. Interns work full-time (40 or more hours per week) for the summer as an active member of your team, often reporting to a dedicated supervisor or manager.

Benefits to the Host Employer

Review any Tennessee MBA resume book and you’ll see results from internships that have saved internship host organizations millions of dollars in implementing process efficiencies, identifying cost savings, and generating new revenue.

Also, by providing such an important aspect of a student’s education, you will have an early opportunity to evaluate potential full-time hires by witnessing their on-the-job performance. Traditionally about 40 percent of Tennessee MBAs return to their intern employer for full-time employment after graduation.

Recruiting an MBA Intern

The steps for recruiting a Tennessee MBA Intern for your company are similar to those for recruiting a full-time hire. While the MBA Career Services staff is available to provide you with some best-practices and assist you facilitate your recruiting activities, the actual details of the internship (including candidate selection, salary, start dates, project details) are negotiated between the student and the employer.

The Tennessee MBA program strives to bring in a diverse pool of students each year. These candidates have different levels of work experience and exposure to different industries. Due to this diversity, not all internship compensation offers will be competitive for all of our students. The average internship salary has traditionally been $3,500 per month, depending on if there are housing allowances or if relocation is required. A good general rule of thumb is that internship compensation is the equivalent of 75-80 percent of what the equivalent full-time position would earn per month.

Internship Recruitment Timing

Some MBA employers conduct internship interviews at the same time as their full-time interviews in the fall semester to avoid multiple trips to campus. However, it can often be difficult to anticipate your organizations specific internship needs until further in the spring. Generally, employers will post their internship opportunities with MBA Career Services in the early part of the spring semester (January – February) and conduct their on-campus or first round phone interviews in late February and early March. Many employers often fly intern candidates to their sites for plant tours, 2nd round interviews, and to meet the team in the middle and end of March. Tennessee MBA classes end the first week of May and students will often make internship employment decisions in early April and May.
