The Core

During the core portion of the program, students cover business basics, with an emphasis on Integrated Value Chain management. The Core of the program contains the following features:

Core I (Early August). The program kicks off with Core I, a three-week(M-F 8:00AM-5:00PM)intensive introduction to the curriculum. The purpose of Core I is to lay a foundation in business basics (e.g., statistics, communication skills, financial analysis), provide essential computers skills, begin developing team-building skills, kickoff the recruiting process for internships and to begin mapping out a career plan. You can expect a traditional classroom format in the mornings, and a series of hands-on, experiential activities and assignments in the afternoons. By the end of Core I, students are prepared to move into the heart of the program. Since the Core I is a critical transition period for students beginning the MBA program, it is taught on a pass-fail basis. All other aspects of the program use a traditional grading system. (Be sure to reserve the first week-end in Core 1 for a negotiation Simulation!)

Core II (August through December). Students sign up for a 15-hour, integrated class consisting of two parallel tracks. The first track (“What every global manager needs to know”) will provide competencies in the business basics of finance, statistics, marketing, strategy, environmental analysis, global business, and leadership skills, etc. The second track (“What every global manager needs to know about Integrated Value Chain Management”) focuses more specifically on the integration of business functions within and across firms in the value chain. Both of the tracks are taught through a series of modules delivered by faculty teams. Interspersed throughout the fall core are a number of individual and team assignments, a variety of formal and informal presentations by students, and SCIA (Supply Chain in Action) activities that allow students to engage in hands-on activities and field trips to bring the value chain to life.

Career Development Course. In addition to the Core, students take a one-credit hour course beginning in Core I in August and ending in December. This course exposes students to a variety of career paths, prepare students to more effectively select a concentration, and develop the tools and skills for a successful internship and full-time job search. Additional workshops are scattered throughout the rest of the program.

Core III (January through Mid-March). Students take a 9-hour integrated course that continues the two tracks from the fall semester – “What every global manager needs to know” and “What every global manager needs to know about Integrated Value Chain Management.”
